We approach every community engagement project as an opportunity for teaching and learning: learning from the community about its hopes, fears and aspirations, and teaching the community about the legal, social, economic and environmental parameters that frame the way projects evolve. This two way transparency creates satisfying outcomes for everyone.
Callan Park Master Plan
In 2010 we partnered with McGregor Coxall to engage the community in developing a Master Plan for Sydney’s controversial Callan Park. Using a dynamic, interactive, iterative program of online engagement at callanparkyourplan.com.au we were able to satisfy the community’s desire for transparent input into decision making.
Callan Park has for so long been the subject of controversy and community activism that this engagement process required a multi-faceted, scaffolded approach. Each stage of the online program was mirrored by active workshops; the results of these workshops were in turn published on the web.
After thousands of online comments, hundreds of participants in online surveys, thousands of document views, many stakeholder briefings and multiple workshops, the community has embraced a new vision for Callan Park as a Wellness Sanctuary based on Project Principles arising out of the substantial protections of the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act 2002.
Leichhardt Council endorsed the Master Plan on 19 July, after more than a decade of controversy about the future of this historic site .
The Callan Park web consultation tool received a NSW AILA Award for Research and Communication in 2010.
